West End Shows

I'll be in London for just two evenings very soon, a weekend. Being London, there are slim pickings for Sunday shows...only 4 shows on Sunday, as we see it...all matinees, as I recall. In any event, has anyone seen anything of particular note to recommend...or anything not worth our precious time? THANKS! :)

I'd highly recommend Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll at the Duke of York's theatre. They have both Saturday & Sunday matinees. The Saturday matinee should be available at the half price booth.

Ron--

Thank you. The show sounds interesting. Of course, anything by Tom Stoppard tends to be! Sunday matinees are not available at the half price booth??

Thank you again.

Rock n' Roll is a superb play. But a large part of its focus is consumed on the lead up - over a period of decades - to the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and the respective reactions of both an Oxbridge and a Czech academic to that unravelling phenomenon. I watched it in the company of an American and a Central European theatregoer. The Central European was entranced by the play. The American thought that it was heavy going and that Stoppard should have given a series of university lectures (instead of writing a play) on the themes he wished to explore.

So, in all honesty, if you're interested in a blackly humourous portrayal of the the background to the fall of Communism in Czechoslovakia coupled with an insight into the socialist thinking beloved of a minority of Oxbridge professors, then you will enjoy this play. If, however, this is alien to your culture and you have no wish to explore these themes, then you should steer clear of Stoppard's latest offering.

You should check the TKTS web page to see what tends to be available on different days. Before my visit in October I noticed that evening shows were never available while Saturday and the week day matinees were. I never looked for Sunday, so I really don't know.
