getting to Thirsk from York

We'll be staying in York for 3 nights in August. We're considering a visit to the Herriot museum in Thirsk and wondering if we should drive or take the the bus from York. A car would allow us to check out a little of the countryside around Thirsk after visiting the museum, but we're not sure if we'd have much time for that anyway (how long does the museum visit take?). Would driving to Thirsk be faster than taking the bus? We're actually not sure that having a rental car with us in York makes sense (We're flying into Manchester, heading straight to York, and from York we'll be making our way to London, with one night along the way--not sure where yet). If having a car allows us to see more in the little time that we have, it might be worth it. Would love to hear your views. Thanks!

You can get to Thirsk by train (although Thirsk rail station is about a mile outside the town so you could either walk on a boring busy road or catch a taxi) or bus (which would drop you in the market place about 50metres from the Herriot Museum). By car it is about 45 mins maximum.

If you do go by car, check out Sutton Bank - drive towards Scarborough for a mile or so and turn right to the gliding club for spectacular views over the Vale of York; there is also a White Horse, oddly enough on White Horse Bank!

You COULD easily spend all 3 days in York though, it's possibly my favourite city in the UK and so historic.

I think it would be a nice idea to rent a car for the day. The museum in Thirsk will only take you an hour or so, and then you could explore further afield in a way that would be impossible on public transport.

Thirsk isn't in the Dales but it is very close by, so you could easily visit some of the places made famous by Herriot. Askrigg has specific Herriot links due to filming of the TV series. But you could also see some of the stunning countryside of the Dales, a National Park of great beauty.

You could visit Jervaulx Abbey, or Castle Bolton, or Aysgarth Falls - there's loads to see.

I'd take the bus - one or two every hour and about half an hour's journey. A car in York is a positive liability.

if you got the train you need to know that the station is about 1 mile from the town centre. It is flat and easy walking along the side of the racecourse .
