3 night break

We're looking for a 3 night break in North Yorkshire in October and don't know where to start!! Ideally we would like: old style pub or similar, b&b but a nice restaurant so we can eat in at least one of the evenings, other pubs shops etc close by and good value. Hope someone can help.

Thank you

Maggie

A suggestion:

tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g190744-…

I've reviewed it as well. Nothing much In Snainton but is half way between Pickering and Scarborough. Near bus route if you don't want to drive. Also close are Thornton le Dale, Hutton le Hole, Helmsley, Rievaulx abbey, NYMR, Whitby etc.

Others will soon be along!

I'm sure we can give you some advice but it would help if you gave us more information and especially why you have chosen North Yorkshire.

Assume you'll have your own car?

And what do you plan to do during the day? Walking? Castles? Abbeys?

North Yorkshire covers a huge swathe of Northern England and contains two National Parks - the Dales and the Moors. Do you want to stay in either of them?

Thanks very much Morgana. Yes we will be driving. We have had a few short breaks in Yorkshire and really liked it. You suggested Helmsley and we have stayed there and loved it. Thats exactly the sort of place we're looking for but the prices seemed a little high.(maybe we're just out of touch!!!) We're not looking to do very much at all on the walking front as OH gets tired quickly so a drive to nearby town and little strolls would be the order of the day. I think Dales rather than Moors ideally. Thanks again

Ok, that's really helpful.

The small town of Pateley Bridge springs to mind straight away. It's in Nidderdale which is an AONB rather than the Dales National Park itself, but it's absolutely lovely with a real old fashioned charm. It is quiet and has several small shops, a chippy, pubs and restaurants etc and is surrounded by beautiful countryside.

It is also within easy driving distance of Harrogate which is fabulous for shopping, restaurants, parks etc.

Pateley is nowhere near as touristy as Helmsley so hopefully the prices might be a little cheaper.

Another option would be Masham which is in Lower Wensleydale. Again it is quiet with a huge market square (2 small markets a week) and some shops including a deli, 2 butchers, very good bakers, small supermarket etc. There are two breweries in the town too which you can tour, and one has a bistro (Black Sheep). Lots of pubs, cafes and a chippy, and again surrounded by beautiful countryside. Easy drive into Ripon if you wanted somewhere bigger.

So, have a look at Pateley and Masham, and if these are no good I'll have another try!
