There are plenty of very good places in York. The main restuarant area of town is Fossgate / Walmgate with over 15 places within 200 metres.

For "foodies" the best 2 places are J Bakers in Fossgate and Meltons - which is off Bishopthorpe Rd which is a bit out of town. Nice places that are popular include Blue Bicycle on Fossgate, Meltons Too on Fossgate. Cafe 8 on Goodramgate is good, as is Plunkets just around the corner near York Minster. Goodramgate has a good family italian in Little Italy and a good tapas place. Rustique is a good French place near Cliffords Tower. Filmore and Union in central York is a good cafe that is getting very good reviews. Le Langhe is very good on Peasholme Green, near the historic Black Swan pub.

Our favourites;

SARA@STJOHNS.

York’s only dining club.

54 St. Johns St. www.saradanesinmedio.com

If you are a foodie or if you want to impress somebody or you are looking for a unique treat then this is for you. Masterchef Finalist Sara Danesin Medio has opened up her home as York’s first dining club. She currently only offers two evening/week and limits diners to 12. Sara is not licensed so you take your own drink – no ‘corkage’. She charges only £39/ head.

J BAKER’S Bistro Moderne. ‘Serve Excellent Vegetarian’

7 Fossgate. 01904 622688 www.jbakers.co.uk

Some of the finest food in York but what do you expect from somebody who had Michelin stars for 10 consecutive years and is listed as one of the UK’s top 35 chefs.

THE RED LION KNAPTON. A fifteen minute drive. ‘Serve Excellent Vegetarian’

Main Street, Knapton, York YO26 6QG, 01904 793957 www.redlionpubyork.com

Have you ever seen Michel Roux judging on Master Chef? Well Annie Prescott was trained by him and then was his chef and has worked in some of the top establishments incl. Le Gavroche under Michel Roux Jnr and The White Hart in partnership with Michel Roux of The Waterside Inn. She took over the pub in the picture postcard village of Knapton and serves traditional pub grub to Michelin 3* quality. What is more a main course, pudding and a drink can cost less than £16 for some of the BEST cooking in York. It does not matter what you have, whether it be a simple Caesar Salad or pan fried Halibut every item is cooked to its absolute perfection. The Sunday carvery is superb.

LE LANGHE. Italian fine dining. ‘Serve Excellent Vegetarian’. The Old Coach House. Peasholme Green. 01904 622584 www.lelanghe.co.uk

The restaurant is open for lunch seven days a week but only on Friday and Saturday nights for dinner. Here is your chance to dine at a restaurant before it wins all the accolades that will come its way. The Grazing menu is fantastic.

THE OLD SIAM. Authentic Thai Dining. ‘Serve Excellent Vegetarian’

126 Micklegate, 01904 635162. www.theoldsiamyork.co.uk

We have back packed Thailand and can assure you this is authentic AND not too hot. Tell Nong you are staying here she will really look after you. Booking is essential. See menu in the folder.

LITTLE ITALY RESTORANTE & Deli. Sardinian fine dining. ‘Serve Excellent Vegetarian’.

12 Goodramgate, 01904 623539 www.littleitalyrestaurantyork.co.uk

Established in 1992 and considered to be one of York’s finest restaurants. Great location, great menu brilliantly cooked and presented, great staff and very friendly owners with a ‘hands-on’ style who obviously enjoy what they are doing. Pre – booking is essential. The deli stocks a range of high quality cheeses which they let us sample before buying.

AMBIENTE. Fine Dining Tapas Restaurant. ‘Serve Excellent Vegetarian’.

14 Goodramgate. 01904689784 www.ambient-tapas.co.uk

A real gem hidden away in Goodramgate. We love it here – affordable ‘fine dining’ tapas – cooked for you by the chef owners. The menu mixes the familiar classics with contemporary tapas that explore their interest in fusion. House wines are fantastic.

CAFE N08 BISTRO. ‘Serve Excellent Vegetarian’

8 Gillygate. 01904 653074 www.cafeno8.co.uk

The closest recommended restaurant. More and more of our guests are eating here. The owners are passionate about quality and this is reflected on your plate. Booking is often essential. Excellent food using fresh local ingredients. Influenced by flavours from around the World their menu reflects their love of food and has wide appeal. They promote a relaxed atmosphere and welcome families. Their prices have risen less than many in York. See menu in the folder.

Bettys Tearooms are a Yorkshire institution and there are 2 branches in York. They do everything from brunch to lunch to afternoon tea and cakes and full meals.

There's often a queue outside but you can book in advance at certain times for afternoon tea. Bettys is also great for presents as they do beautifully packaged tea, coffee, biscuits, chocs etc etc. I love going to any Bettys branch - it always feels like a treat somehow, however often I go!

Someone else has mentioned the Tapas restaurant on Goodramgate and I'll second this, lovely little place great for lunch or evening.

-orbital girl Shame to hear that your friends didn't enjoy the Blue Bicycle as we have always had wonderful meals here and cant fault it. This would be where I would have suggested for dinner.
