NT properties near York

Spending four days in York in June and daughter keen to visit NT properties within the area.

Is Hardwick Hall doable on a day trip?

Grateful for any info

harwick Hall is just off the M1 so could be done as a daytrip.

In York itself, right behind York Minster is the Treasurer's House, a NT property with the collection made for the house by the man who restored it.

Just north of York is Beningbrough Hall, now the northern outpost of the National Portrait Gallery, so it has some of the gems of their collection as well as the pictures which came with the house. There are other NT properties a little further away: Nunnington Hall springs to mind and Nostell Priory a little further afield.

Hardwick is certainly do-able in a day as it is just off the M1 motorway. Not far away from Hardwick is another of the "Palaces of the Peak", Chatsworth House which, while not a NT property, is a spectacular building. You could do both in a day.

Don't o/d too much on Nt properties, though. There is so much to see and do in York so leave yourselves time to enjoy it.

And don't forget Castle Howard - not NT but magnificent and easily reached from York.

Thanks for all the info.

Having done a bit of research into all that York itself has to offer, we may just confine ourselves to the Treasurer's House and Beningbrough Hall.

Hardwick looks like a full day so may check out and visit the Hall en route to a late flight back to Ireland

Hardwick Hall is my favourite NT property but it is a fair drive from York, perhaps also consider Nunnington Hall, which is really close to Castle Howard:

I would choose Nunnington over Beningbrough if you prefer "homely" to "grand", and is also near to Helmsley with its Castle and nearby Rievaulx Abbey, which is English Heritage. nearby Rievaulx Terraces are NT. Fountains Abbey is free to both NT and EH members and a World Heritage Site.
