first timers

we're a couple of 50 somethings heading to york for the first time beginning of june. apart from seeing all the tourist attractions, we'd like to find a nice pub at night with music or a show? also a nice restaurant for a good steak? staying for 3 nights. any suggestions will be much appreciated.

But on which three days (of the week) will be in York and what are your tastes in music, please?

In terms of shows, York Theatre Royal (www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk) and the Grand Opera House (atgtickets.com/venues/grand-opera-house-york/) are the two main venues in the city. The former tends to be more serious/artistic plays and the latter has the musicals, tribute shows and so on (though there's crossover too).

There's a thriving amateur theatre scene as well, with some good quality shows - most of them sell tickets through the Theatre Royal so it's worth asking at the box office there if that's something you're interested in.

In terms of live music in pubs, your best bet is to look out as you walk the streets - again, there's a really good scene for music depending on what you like, and most pubs with music advertise it fairly prominently. Dan Webster (www.danwebster.co.uk), Miles Cain (www.milescain.co.uk) and Holly Taymar (www.hollytaymar.com) are personal favourites of mine.

The York Press usually has reasonably comprehensive listings on a Friday.

Perhaps if you could match dates to events and not vice versa.

The Phoenix does Sunday night jazz. There's a regular "What's On" column on The York Press website as has been mentioned. http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/events/

As for steak - there are lots of restuarants down Fossgate and Walmgate including a steak gaucho grill. Nice pubs for food and atmosphere include Olde Starre on Stonegate, Royal Oak, Goodramgate, Old White Swan on Goodramgate, Stonegate Yard on Little Stonegate and Guy Fawkes next to York Minster.

A visit to York Tourist Board near the Library (corner of Blake St) would also be advised as they do passes that get you discounts off attractions.
