Looking for rural inn/lodge for hiking base for a week

We are hoping to stay in one place with great hiking from the lodge, with minimal or no use of an automobile - I found such a place online 2 months ago but sadly have lost the name and can't find it again. (It was a place that packed lunches for you and served both breakfast and dinner). We have done a couple of hiking trips based in Nat. Trust cottages and found that we spent way too much time in the car - trying to avoid this on next trip. If possible we'd also like to figure out how to travel to this inn from Heathrow without renting a car (i.e., perhaps flying to nearby airport and then renting a taxi?) We don't need to "see all the sights" but really just want to do some good day hikes in a beautiful area (preferably with the dry stone walls, sheep, etc!) All ideas/suggestions welcome!

When are you travelling? What is your budget?

Public transport in the Dales does exist but is patchy - my village in Wensleydale gets two buses a day.

Have you thought what you will do if you are somewhere very rural and the weather is so bad you can't get out to hike? You need a Plan B up here!

The Dales cover a very large area so I think you'd need to sort out your lodgings first and then work out how to get here. For instance it might be best to get a train up to York or Thirsk and then take it from there if you were staying somewhere to the east.

Many places will pack you a lunch and do other meals but you might fancy staying somewhere that offers you a choice of places to go in the evening?

First thoughts - have a look at Pateley Bridge (Nidderdale), Grassington (Wharfedale) and Masham (Wensleydale). All are big villages with amenities, surrounded by beautiful countryside, perfect for hiking but not so rural that you'll be stuck for something to do if the weather is foul. All have buses going to them. None have trains although they might have done 50 years ago! Personally I'd advise hiring a car every time (no need at all for long trips) but that's up to you.

Are you dead set on the Yorkshire Dales? There's a train line running up the Hope Valley in the Peak District to Edale station. There's great hiking, pubs and scenery there.

Look no further!

I don't know what your budget is but this is a lovely spot. Lots of walks right from the door, lots of sheep and dry stone walls too. I grew up 10 miles from here and though not short of rain, on a beautiful sunny day there is little to match it.

Good luck.
