Help needed to make most of the dales this week

Unfortunately I am working right up until we go away for a short break in the dales and cannot see any time to do my normal research so I would love your help.

We are staying in the Aysgarth Falls Hotel for one night and then just outside leeds for two days (i know this is not in the dales but we have vouchers to stay for free).

We have never been to yorkshire so if you can please give us tips on where to stay and anything to do we would really appreciate it. Two adults and a 9 year old.

Thank you all so much Ali

Very difficult to answer without knowing what your interests are. Assume that you will visit the waterfalls and go for a walk on your Dales day? Maybe walk from your Hotel up to Bolton Castle which often has events on for children. But do check opening times.

Unfortunately the Forbidden Corner is closed until the Spring.

Jervaulx Abbey is a lovely place to visit, free entry and very atmospheric. There's a tea room opposite and an ice cream parlour up the road, but again check opening times. Jervaulx never closes but the tea room has seasonal opening times.

Leeds is a big, bustling city with very good shopping, museums etc. The Royal Armouries museum in particular is good for children. If the weather is fine (it's been beautiful and really Spring like for the last few days) then the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is great.

Tropical World at Roundhay is also good, as is the Medical Museum.

If you've never been to York then you can catch a quick regular train from Leeds. York is absolutely beautiful!

Hi Ali,

Near Aysgarth :-

Hawes with the ropemaker and the Wensleydale Cheese centre,

If you drive South from Hawes through Gayle and up the valley to just beyond Dodds Fell Hill you could north walk along a section of the Pennine Way.

Further afield :- A train journey along part of the Settle - Carlisle railway that goes over Ribblehead viaduct.

Near Leeds:-

Bradford forThe National Media Museum (Google it for details of what is on).

Bingley The 5 rise lock on the canal - very impressive when boats are going up or down

Howarth for the Bronte museum and also the steam railway that runs to Settle (check if it is running this time of year)

Hope this is useful
