Rothwell England

Does anyone know much about Rothwell and what transportation we can take from Melton Mowbray? We aren't planning on hiring a car but would like to see Holy Trinity Church. We understand that my husband's ancestor, Owen Oglethorpe, is buried there.

There is a Rothwell in Northants, one in West Yorkshire, both have a Holy Trinity Church, which one do you mean?

try posting in a local forum, this is for London questions, not many people in London will have heard of Rothwell.

Nearest train station to Rothwell is Kettering, you would need to take a bus or taxi from there. The church is quite small but architecturally interesting as the trinity theme features in all aspects of the building including the church having a triangular shape.

I'm not sure of either of these 'facts' but you could Google it if you wish

1. Rothwell is pronounced Rowell

2. In the crypt of the church there is an ossuary. Fascinating. You might have to apply in advance to see it.

To get there by public transport:

1. Cross Country train from Melton to Leicester. Journey time 14 minutes.

2. 45 minute wait at Leicester station for the East Midlands train to Kettering. This is the train to London. Journey time 20 minutes

3. Taxi from Kettering to Rothwell, a journey of about 4 miles OR walk from station to Newland Street, approx 10 minutes, get Stagecoach bus 19 (Kettering to Corby). Bus leaves every hour at 35 minutes past the hour. Journey time 10 minutes.

A postscript to the above. Another option is to take the train from Leicester to Corby (Rothwell being roughly midway between Corby and Kettering). Trains from Leicester to Corby are not as frequent as Leicester-Kettering trains but, on the plus side, Corby taxis have a reputation for being excellent value for money. I read once that Corby is second only to London in terms of taxis per head of population, the explanation given for this was that when the Corby steelworks shut, many steelworkers used their redundancy money to buy taxis.

May be the OP's ancestor is in the ossuary so they might be able to shake his hand ;-)
