I will be in Carlisle for 2 nights at the end of June and was considering taking a train ride (using my Britrail pass) to Newcastle for a scenic ride. I would immediately get on the train to head back towards Carlisle. On the return, I want to walk a short portion of Hadrian's Wall (Steel Rigg to Housesteads, or Housesteads to Steel Rigg).
My questions are:
1. Is the train ride from Carlisle to Newcastle really very scenic or should I skip that and take the bus from Carlisle to Steel Rigg, walk the wall path to Housesteads, then take the bus back to Carlisle.
2. If I were to take the train ride, should I get off at Bardon's Mill, take a bus or hike to Housesteads, hike to Steel Rigg, then catch the bus back to Carlisle?
3. Any suggestions for some place for lunch?
Anyone have any better suggestions? I can walk about 8-10 miles ok. I will be jet-lgged somewhat though since I will have arrived from the U.S. the previous morning!
