Good base for a walking holiday in the Peak District?

Any recommendations for a small town or village which has good pubs and restaurants. Planning a week's walking holiday in the Peak District in September. No need for loads of shops but places to eat with good food and ales in the evening is a must. Currently looking at Edale or maybe Buxton, Castleton? Any other suggestions or endorsements for those places?

Have a look at the white peak. Beautiful varied landscape and fabulous villages. Consider Youlgrave, Eyam, Hartington or Winster wher we have the largest concentration of listed buildings - picture postcard. Great walks in Dovedale, Lathkil Dale. Stanton in Peak has th Flying Childers voted best pub in Derbyshire.
