2 questions - taxis and Tolkien

A couple questions for my upcoming visit -

How prevalent are taxis in Oxford? I expect I'll have no problem getting one from the train station to the City Center, but what about from a hotel to a restaurant? Or from a City Center pub to The Trout Inn restaurant? I didn't know if rides needed to be prearranged, or if taxis are around enough to just be hailed?

2nd question - does anyone do a Tolkien tour on Sundays in January? Any recommendations?

Thanks for help on both issues.

Try www.oxfordwalkingtours.com they have a few Tolkien experts in their group.

Alternatively you can visit Exeter, Pembroke and Merton colleges yourself (his undergraduate and post-grad/teaching colleges) or The Eastgate and The Eagle and Child pubs where the Inkings used to meet. You could even take the bus up Woodstock Road to Wolvercote Cemetery to visit his grave and alight on the way back to see his house at 20 Northmoor Road.

Unless you are infirm, you will find that Oxford is very compact and easy to walk around - a taxi will only be useful if leaving Oxford, or if lugging large quantities of luggage. Apart from at the station, there are not many taxis around to be hailed, but your accommodation will have details of ones that can be phoned to pick you up. However, within Oxford, you won't feel the need unless you have mobility problems. Oxford has plentiful bus services, which will get you most places you want to go including Wolvercote (Trout)

Make sure you read the reviews of the Trout carefully before choosing it as a restaurant visit.

Beckysimms - let's say I'd like to dine at a pub that has a similar character, but perhaps does a better job of dinner than The Trout, what might you suggest? Anything closer to the town center? (I enjoy walking so it doesn't need to be too close by.)

We like eating at The Jam Factory. It's the former Frank Cooper jam factory and is a bar/restaurant/art gallery. Not far from the station, on Hollybush Row. Quirky place, great atmosphere and good food.

As said above, Oxford is very compact so you will have no trouble getting around. And you see more on foot, which is a bonus.

Enjoy

Rose & Crown - North Parade

Turf Tavern - Bath Place - lovely old pub, decent pub food, or the Bear but if you want a gastronomic experience then I would have a couple of beers in one of Oxford's many historic pubs (see above + The Eagle & Child, the White Horse, the Kings Arms) and have dinner in a restaurant - Brasserie Blanc, Quod Brasserie, Browns etc

If you like walking, there is a nice walk through Jericho to Port Meadow and then up along the Thames to the Trout. You can stop on the way at the Perch in Binsey which appears to have changed its menu since last I went there and now looks worth a try. Take a torch if going for dinner, however - maybe more a trip for lunch in January.
