in order to save time, is it possible to combine any of the two places in a full day?

Cambridge, no.

Oxford and Bath: possible, but not recommended.

If you want to do Oxford, combine it with Blenheim...but even that is too much in one day. And how do you plan to travel, from London I assume.

I don't think a first time visitor needs to visit both Oxford and Cambridge. Although they have their differences, they are both ancient university towns and unless you are here for weeks one of them would probably be enough this time. Better to visit another town with a completely different character.
