Honeymoon in Taunton

Hello Everyone,

I am not sure if anyone could give me any ideas of what my partner and I could do around Taunton for our honeymoon? We will have a car so can easily get around, but really unsure of any romantic things we could plan for.

Our honeymoon is in April, so not too long away now... any advice would be most welcome!

Thanks in advnace, Lolly x

Hi Lolly, congratulations!

Taunton is not known as a honeymoon destination so this is a new one for me. Really need to know what sort of things you both like to do. Romance means different things to different people.

Hi

You could take a steam train ride on the West Somerset Railway, and maybe have lunch on their luxury dining train west-somerset-railway.co.uk/section.php/64/1…

You are close to Exmoor, have alook at this for ideas of things to do. exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/visiting/things-t…

Dunster castle is a nice place to visit, www.nationaltrust.org.uk/dunster-castle/

And Taunton is a pleasant town to spend a bit of time.

Thank you both for your replies :)

Taunton is definitely a new one for honeymooners, we just wanted to visit the West Country and found the most beautiful cottage to stay at with a large hot tub in the garden... so the area choice was not really what we looked for... but before booking checked all online and seems like quite a quiet, pretty place in the country.

In regards to romantic things, possibly a visit to a spa, a nice historical walk, sightseeing spots, a boat trip, theater visit or similar. We will have a car, so day trips can easily be planned... We don't mind driving up to 1.5hrs to get somewhere.

We fancy visiting Bath too - but again, not really sure whats to offer. I have had a look over a few sites online, but with all the other wedding plans etc, not really wanting to load page after page of info!

Thanks for the congratulations - I am very excited!!!

The West Somerset Railway as Badcat110 said is certainly worth going on.

Wells, a lovely city with a stunning cathedral, is about an hours drive from Taunton whilst Bath is about an hour and a half away and Exmoor considerably nearer.

Hestercombe Gardens just outside Taunton are one of my favourite gardens to visit with both formal and informal areas plus nice cafe - easy to spend a couple of hours there.

Taunton itself has the Brewhouse Theatre and whilst it's not as big as the ones in Bath or Bristol it's always very popular. As far as a spa is concerned obviously there's the one in Bath but my wife and daughters recently went to the one at the Mount Somerset Hotel just outside Taunton and came back very happy with the treatments they received.

Exeter is only a 45 minute drive from Taunton and has plenty of shops plus free guided walks around different parts of the city.

I would second the recommendation for Wells, which has a lovely catherdral and pretty cobbled streets to wander. You may also like to see Glastonbury, walking up to the Tor is great with stunning views of Somerset from the hill.

Bath is also wonderful. I love going for a tea (or for a real treat a 'high tea') at the Pump Rooms, seeing the Royal Crescent or Pulteney Bridge and just generally wandering the beautiful city:

Dunster is really sweet, with a nice National Trust castle to explore and you are not far from Exmoor. If you want to travel further afield try going from Dunster over to Porlock and on to Lynton and Lynmouth.

Bath is wonderful, but a bit of a hike from Taunton - why not save it for a first anniversary trip ? it's a doddle by train from Pompey.

I second the recommendation of Exmoor, though the Quantocks are closer. Drive to Exford (exFORD, not EXford, apparently) and then walk up to Dunkery Beacon - it's a good 2 hours each way. The OS map will show you the way. Late lunch/ early supper at the Crown, then back to Taunton. Best route is the A358 to Bishop's Lydeard, then lft on to the B3224, takes you all the way.

My parents spent their honeymoon in Minehead (OK so it was 1949) so you are not the first to decide Somerset is an exotic place.

If you like the countryside and quirky things there is lots to do.

beautifulengland.net/photos/…

tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g186369-c159342/Som… There is a falconary centre between between Minehead & Porlock.

Dunster has a castle & ancient pub tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g186369-c158858/Som…

Porlock Weir with a pub & resturant overlooking the sea http://www.porlockweir.com/porlock_weir.html

A beautiful and quiet spot is the walk from Rockford to Watersmeet, a beautiful valley with a pub for lunch at the beginning and tearoom by the river at the end http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/watersmeet/

A vintage double decker bus goes from Minehead over Exmoor to Lynmouth

http://www.quantockmotorservices.co.uk/ a great experience up and down one of the steepest hills in England and takes you to -

Lynmouth with a thatched pub sitting outside overlooking the sea and a hydrolic railway going up the cliff http://www.cliffrailwaylynton.co.uk/

For boat trips you could take a small coastal trip from Lynmouth or Illfracombe.

More romantic would be the Oldenburg from Illfracombe going to Lundy Island http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lundy/ www.lundyisland.co.uk/oldenburg_visual.htm

Or go on a paddle steamer from Minehead to.......http://exmoorencyclopedia.org.uk/contents-list/49-p/753-paddle-steamer-waverley-and-balmoral.html and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LBBWeBD3vw The dates for this year aren't out yet but will be at the Minehead TIC or harbour http://www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk/index.htm

For Spas you really need Bath......a special experience.

For you to look yourself http://www.visit-exmoor.co.uk/must-see-and-do or if you want any further info on any of these things just ask.

Hope this helps with the wedding chaos!

Wouldn't let me edit - look at pics of Tarr Steps, there is just the river & resturant, which has good reviews, in a lovely valley.

Also Safaris over the moor www.discoverysafaris.com/ so you can look and not drive, will take you to places you wouldn't see otherwise.
