Best day for Bath?

We will be in London for a week, and plan to take a day trip to visit Bath (and another to Oxford). Is there a best day of the week to visit Bath, based on what's open, or train tickets? Or a day to avoid?

I would say Thursday would be best.

Go straight to the Roman Baths from the station, if you need a coffee before you go in you can get one in the Grand Pump Room above the RBs (you will see what I mean).

Allow at least 90mins- 2 hours, and get an audio guide.

Best to avoid the Saturdays if you don't want it to be too crowded. However, every day spent in Bath is a good day!

"...or train tickets?"

When do you plan on visiting?

If you want cheap advance tickets then book well in advance, otherwise you will have to spend a lot more money.

Have a look at times and fares on www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk

As mentioned above, try and avoid Bath at the weekend, especially when Bath Rugby are playing at home.

Will definitely plan to avoid Saturday in Bath!

About the train fares... As we are 4 people traveling off peak, it seems that an Off Peak GroupSave fare will be almost the same as the advance purchase fare, and more flexible. Do I need to buy the outbound in advance? Or the GroupSave Off Peak tickets do not go up in price as you get closer to the travel date?

Thank you!

Make sure you take advantage of the discounts you get with your train tickets. visitbath.co.uk/things-to-do/2-for-1-offers

Try to reserve seating on the train if you know what times you will be travelling as you may not get a seat. That route is really busy and people are travelling with a lot of luggage which takes up more room on the train.

And avoid coming on a weekend as it's crazily busy, and Mondays as a lot of tourist attractions and some restaurants are closed on that day.

For others who have this question , we've just returned from a Sunday trip to Bath. A big advantage was the ability to purchase an off-peak return ticket, with a "group save" fare for the 4 of us. Not sure if this is available on weekdays, but it gave us flexibility and a substantial savings.
