cheddar gorge - worth it?

We will be traveling from Cheltenham to Padstow with a possible stop n/bodmin moor. Should we direct our route through this gorge or take a more direct route like the M5? Thanks

Hi Crystalcovebum

If you just wish to travel between Cheltenham and Padstow it is not worth directing your route through the gorge.

The Gorge is a place to visit and spend some time as the principle reason for visiting it are to go down into the coves and see the stalactite's and stalagmite's formations.

There is nothing other than this at the gorge and it is getting increasingly difficult to "park" for a brief stop.

My personal thought would be to give the caves a miss and look for some of the by roads across the moors to explore to fill out what is only a 3.5 hr trip on the motorways and A roads mainly dual carriageway into Cornwall although a certain times of day and week they do fill up very rapidly particularly around Bristol I have never driven this section of the M5 without almost coming to a stop.

Best of luck

Hi there

My thoughts entirely - Cheddar is a bit awkward to get to from the M5 as it sits between two junctions which entails a bit of backtracking.

Get straight down to Cornwall and if time permits, have a look around Lostwithiel, a really lovely old historic town, close to Bodmin, and with Lanhydrock House and Restormel castle close by too.

Agree with both above posters. You won't see anything any more interesting than the terrain around where you live!

Restormel Castle (ruin) is worth a stop.

Being biased, a trip to Cheddar is well worth putting on your itinerary. The gorge is far more interesting than places like Stonehenge - climb hundreds of feet up or climb down hundreds of feet into the caves. See "Cheddar man" in the museum, buy some scrumpy, eat cream teas - gorgeous!

Whats a 30 minute detour off the boring motorway?
