To do and out on a weekend

Hello

Me and my husband (age: 40+) are travelling to Newcastle the upcoming weekend. We will be staying at Hilton Newcastle Gateshead. The purpose for the trip is 2 concerts but we want to do a bit more. So hope for some help for my questions.

1. When do the pubs close on a friday? Is there any good bars/pubs around the hotel?

2. What would you recommend that we do during the day on saturday and sunday? Anything not to be missed? :-)

3. Any good restaurants you would recommend?

Thanks and hope for a lot of answers:-)

I would second café vivo (not a typical pizza/pasta Italian and really nice food) and café 21. These are both near your hotel on the Newcastle side of the Quayside.

Depending on what's your thing, there are lots of good museum and art galleries in Newcastle with fab exhibitions - Centre for Life (Body Works Vital), Laing art gallery (Constable and Turner), Discovery Museum (all about science / engineering and life in Newcastle).

A trip to the coast is always worth while, with nice shops and restaurants in Tynemouth!

The Broad Chare is pretty good too, not far from your hotel (on the Newcastle side, as are most things). It's a pub with a restaurant upstairs. Pubs and bars close between midnight and 2/3am on Fridays, most city centre ones at 1am. On the Gateshead side of the river, the Central Bar is good, but you're probably best off heading over the bridge into Newcastle.

The Baltic (next to the Sage) even if you don't like the modern art the building is great.

From you hotel walk over the swing bridge, explore historic areas around the castle, Side, Bettie Surtees House, head to the Cathedral then up to historic Grey Street, go in the recently restored Theatre Royal if you can. Then head towards the Laing Gallery.

Trip 2 - from hotel go past Sage to Millennium bridge head over it and right towards Ouseburn. Discover regeneration projects and small galleries and artisan workshops, interesting pubs, Toffee factory art, and up to the Biscuit Factory the best place to buy art at all prices.
