Peterborough and Ely are both great and on the same, direct, train line from Birmingham New Street (to Stansted Airport).

Spread your wings a little and come and have a look at York? Three and a half hours on the train if you can live with that but well worth a visit

If you are thinking of Peterborough and Ely, you should also consider Cambridge.

What about Lichfield? A fine cathedral - assume you can get there by train.

Sorry just re-read your post, you may have already done it.

You can as Lichfield is on the cross city line. It is a fine cathedral that can date its origins to the 9th century. Lichfield is a fine little city that is not on the tourist trail so does not get busy.
