Lots of pubs and Italian restaurants which are suitable for large family groups.

Pubs

there are several JD Wetherspoons pubs - the ones closest to New St are Briar Rose and Square Peg.

Trocadero on Temple Street.

The Sun on the Hill – Bennetts Hill.

The Lost & Found – Bennetts Hill.

Italian

ASK and Bella Italia – both on New Street.

As for play areas, I don’t know of any in this area of the city centre. The Library of Birmingham has loads of things for kids to do, fun stuff, play areas and 2 roof gardens. Open until 8pm. A short walk from New Street (and near lots of pubs). There is also a park at Eastside with a play area – 15 minute walk from New Street. There’s a great pub right next to it (The Woodman - http://thewoodmanbirmingham.co.uk ) but that’s more adult than aimed at families. You could call them to ask if they can accommodate large family group.
