Good base for exploring

We are travelling from Braintree to the Isle of Wight in July and have three days to do it. We are very fond of castles and medieval history so want to take in Arundel and the Weald and Downland Museum. The question is where is a good place to base ourselves, Brighton seems obvious but is there anywhere else I should look?

Arundel- close to all the sites you are interested plus less traffic and city to deal with (as you would find in Brighton). Close to Arundel is Fishbourne Roman Palace remains, Bosham and Petworth. Brighton would be at the edge of all these - unless you intend to go further east.
