7 Day driving Tour itineraray Wales

My wife and I are going to Wales in May 2012.

We will have a rental car so we are looking for some driving tour recommendations, route or sites to take in while we are there. Any input would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Where are you starting from and finishing at , and what sort of things are you into - castles, scenery, coastline, wildlife, other historic sites ?? All these are available (plus much more...) so if you can state your preferences, there'll be plenty of ideas to give you an unforgettable trip..!

I know it is rather an old post but have a look here:

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g186425-i307-k26…

The initial question was very similar to yours. It gives details of a route starting in south Wales and driving up to the North. There are links to things to do and see on the way.

It hasn't been broken down into days but that is easy enough. Have a read and think and then come back with more specific ideas and questions.

Many thanks for your reply.

We shall be picking up a car in London and then head off to Wales.

Our main interests are in Scenery, Historic sites and Coastline.

No castles please.

Lots of nice Pubs for dinner.

All castled out from our last 2 visits to UK.

Best place to find pubs that do good food is the Good Pub Guide:

http://www.thegoodpubguide.co.uk/

You can do an advanced search to find pubs that have an award for food.

I'd suggest that you use the M4 from London to South Wales, then work your way up to North Wales. Some ideas in the link that EESW has posted above (but quite castle-orientated..!). The roman remains at Caerwent and Caerleon are fairly close together and just over the Severn bridge (entry point into Wales from England on the M4). South Wales has a lot of industrial heritage (particularly coal mining and iron / steel making) so there are attractions and museums based upon this (eg the Big Pit mining museum). Probably the best coastline in the south is on the Gower peninsular (west of Swansea) and in Pembrokeshire (further west again) particularly north of the Cleddau estuary. There are several prehistoric sites here, too (Pentre Ifan, Castell Henllys ...it's not a castle, it's an iron age hill fort...!). Plenty of lovely scenery in Mid-Wales, but less in the way of visitor attractions. The north is more mountainous, with Snowdon the highest point in Wales (and a rack railway to the top). There are various other narrow gauge railways here, mostly based on the former slate quarrying industry (Ffestiniog Railway, Talyllyn Railway) and of course spectacular scenery. Some nice coastline too, although the north coast suffers from being "caravan-infested" due to it's relative proximity to Liverpool and Manchester. I'd suggest that you plan out a rough route, and hopefully people with local knowledge will be able to help you select pubs/overnight stops and local attractions.

A look in a guidebook might help you, but here are some ideas:

Tintern Abbey

Big Pit

Cardiff Castle (I note your curious antipathy to castles but the interior is spectacular - more a 19c fantasy than a castle)

St.Fagans

the Gower + esp. Rhossili

the Brecon Beacons

the Botanic Gardens at Llanarthne

Carreg Cennen castle (sorry again, but the views are outstanding)

Freshwater West

St.Davids

Boat trip around Ramsay Island or further afield

Melin Tregwynt

Newport Parrog

Aberaeron

Aberystwyth + Devils Bridge

Borth + the dunes at Ynyslas

Cader Idris

Dolgellau

Portmeirion

the Ffestiniog railway

Llechwedd slate caverns

the whistling sands at Porthor near Aberdaron

Snowdon (walk or railway)

Llandudno

Llangollen

That will take you on an anti-clockwise tour of Wales

Places to eat/stay:

Crown at Whitebrook

3 Salmons in Usk

The Bear at Crickhowell

Fairyhill Hotel - Gower

Cwtch - St.Davids

Cnapan - Newport Pembs

Harbourmaster - Aberaeron

Plas Bodegroes - Pwllheli

St Fagans is fascinating if you are interested in buildings and how people lived.

Big Pit - marvellous if you want to find out about mining heritage of the area.

St Davids - smallest cathedral city in Britain with some superb walking along the coastal footpath and a boat trip to Ramsey Island.

Devil's Bridge - Vale of Rheidol Railway is a leisurely steam trip up from Aberystwyth. Do allow time to do the walks to see the waterfalls (possibly one of the best short walks in Wales)

Porthmerion is the most amazing place. It was built by a very quirky architect and is often described as an 'Italianate village'. It is impossible to describe. Do a google image search to give an impression.

Llyn Peninsula especially Aberdaron at the far tip. Good walking around the headland with views across to Bardsey Island (check out the possibility of a boat trip there ) and round to Whistling Sands/Porth Oer beach.

Visit Beddgelert, find Gellert's grave and find out about the legend. Walk through Pass of Aberglaslyn.

As well as the narrow gauge steam railways (Welsh highland and Ffestiniog - both very different but superb runs with amazing scenery) there is Llechwedd Slate caverns near Blaenau Ffestiniog where there are two trips you can do into the mines (again both different and both well worth while)

Museum of Slate Mining in Llanberis. Do the Vivian Trail here which takes you up through the old mining terraces.
