Itinerary/driving directions help

Hi,

I am after some advice regarding a trip we will be taking next year after june. We will be in Liverpool and would like to travel to Newport. We are thinking of hiring a car and traveling from Liverpool to Llandudno and then driving down to Newport over a period of 3 or 4 days. We are interested in just about everything, and happy to look at anything. We have learnt never to dismiss something that doesnt appeal initially. We do enjoy socialising in pubs during the evening and we are both reasonably fit 50 year olds.

My questions are

1 - what would be a good route to take from Llandudno to Newport, and what are the sights to see long the way.

2 - Good places to stay - no preferences, but B&Bs are fine with us. Happy to pay up to 150 £/night for good hotels, and around/under 100£ for B&Bs. (Hey, just figured out how to make the £ symbol - yay)

3 - It it possible to do the trip by train. We both enjoy train travel, and dont mind lugging our bags around a bit as we pack light.

4 - Good pubs on the way? Especially the ones with Brains cask ales.

We have a place to stay in Newport, and we are hoping for a leisurely drive down. This will be a part of a 4 week trip next year. We have been visited Cardiff before, so we don't need to go there.

Thanks

Dave

You can easily get the train down from Llandudno to Newport and it would take about 3.5 to 4 hours. The line mainly goes along the England/Wales border through Shrewsbury, Ludlow, Hereford, Cwmbran etc.

Check times and fares here: www.nationalrail.co.uk

If you base yourself in Llandudno, or even Conwy, then you would probably be best to hire a car to explore the region, especially Snowdonia, for a few days and then maybe take the train down south.

But why do you need to go to Newport?

To be honest with you it isn't anything special.

Hi Dave,

If I was driving from Llandudno to Newport over three or four days this would be my itinerary.

Probably spend day 1 in or around Llandudno

http://www.visitllandudno.org.uk/

Then day 2 drive south on A470 to Betws-y-Coed, Dolgellau and Llanbryn-mair (perhaps making a diversion to Machynlleth to visit the Centre for Alternative Technolog yhttp://www.cat.org.uk/index.html.) Then B4518 to Llanidloes followed by A44 and A4120 to Devil's Bridge. From here take B4343 to Tregaron stopping off at Strata Florida (http://www.castlewales.com/strata.html) near Pontrhydfendigaid.

I would either stay at Y Talbot a 16th Century pub in the town (http://ytalbot.com/en/ ), or for a really different experience buy some food in Tregaron and stay at Dolgoch Hostel (www.elenydd-hostels.co.uk/hostels/dolgoch/).

assuming you stop in Tregaron then day 3 take the fantastic minor road from Tregaron, past Dolgoch Hostel and Abergwesyn to Beulah and then A483 to Llandovery followed by A4069 to Brynamen (keep your eyes open for wild ponies between Pont Aber and Brynamen) and A4068 to Gurnos. I would then go north on A4067 to Abercraf, visit Dan Yr Ogof Caves (www.showcaves.co.uk/index_half_term.html) and stay at either Ancient Briton (http://ancientbriton.co.uk/) or the Abercrave Inn (http://www.abercraveinn.co.uk/). The Ancient Briton is the better pub but The Abercrave Inn has the better accommodation.

From here I would take the A4221 to Glyn Neath And then the A465 to Abergavenny perhaps stopping off at the whisky distillery at Penderyn just outside Hirwaun (http://www.welsh-whisky.co.uk/). From Abergavenny take the A4062 to Newport.

Just my preference!

Bob

Hi

Thanks or the replies.

Matt_1376 - we are going to Newport to visit friends and we are trying to put some sort of order to our trip so that we arent zigzagging our way across the UK.

travelbob 31 - thanks for the reply. We will certainly check out your suggestions.

Thanks

Dave

I'd just add to Bob's great suggested route a possible diversion on the way from Glynneath to Penderyn to visit 'waterfall country' . You can head to Pontneddfechan and take a walk through the woods to see a number of different waterfalls - one of which you can walk behind (and get soaking wet!)

I go along with GweilchynLlundian and would add that you could visit the Penderyn whisky distillery. The whisky is terrific!!
