Llangollen canal boat trip

Hello, we are going to the UK in July 2010, and hope to get a 6 berth canal boat in Wales. From the bits of research we have done the Llangollen trip appears to be very good. We can only spend 7 days on the canal/s, and are a bit concerned about being held up for too long at the locks, thereby shortening the time enjoying teh countryside etc. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Dave

The whole idea of UK canal cruising is that you do not rush to meet self imposed deadlines, but take your time and enjoy the experience of travelling at 4 mph or less. In any event, the Llangollen is one of the narrowest and shallowest of all canals, especially in its upper parts where there is a 2 mph limit. The locks are an integral part of the canal experience and give opportunity to meet and chat with other boaters. The vast majority of boaters thoroughly enjoy the experience. In any event, the Llangollen has narrow locks (i.e. 7ft wide) which are normally light and easy to operate. Having said all that, you may suffer long hold ups at lock flights, particularly at Grindley Brook. If you are still concerned, try hiring from a boatyard on the canal itself. There are few locks in the upper part of the canal.

Hi,

Maestermgn & Welsh Lady Cruisers & Mid Wales Narrowboats is a well established company.Narrow boat hire for 2-8 persons.

The Maestermyn Cruisers Fleet.

www.maestermyn.co.uk

Maestermyn Marina at Whittington is 2hrs cruising hours from Blackwater Meadow Marina.

If you want to go fishing, buy a licence at the post office.

At bridge 15,just before you go under A5 road, there is a nice moorings outside Lion Keys pub & restaurant. This is a lovely place to eat and i can recommend the Steak.

At bridge 21,you can moor up,walk to Bridge Inn,the last pub in England, before you cross the Chirk Aqueduct into Wales. The Aqueduct is 70ft high. Also visit Chirk Castle.

At Bridge 41,visit The Sun Trevor pub. Also visit Dinas Bran Castle on a steep hill. There is a review & photo"s of the castle ruins on my profile. The photo"s also show views of canal boats, views of Llangollen and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. On my profile its under Llangollen canal walk.

Before you cross Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, stop at Froncysyllte for the night. There are two pubs,Britannia & Aqueduct Inn.
