Restaurants in Cardiff

Is anyone familiar with the dinner menu at La Fosse on Hayes in Cardiff? Does it serve meats (like lamb) as well as seafood? Also, is there a wide range of ethnic restaurants near the city center? We'll be there in November. Thanks very much.

Hi there

Well I for one have never eaten there, but there was a long running (now sadly closed) BBC website for reviews of local eateries and I recall La Fosse starting off very well and gradually going downhill in users' estimations. However, the last review I read was about a year ago.

When you say "ethnic" what exactly do you mean? My idea of "ethnic" could be quite different to yours! One consolation - Cardiff city centre is compact and so there are many choices close by. We don't do "fine dining" here (ie £20 for a lettuce leaf served with tuxedo and a French accent) but we are pretty good at offering some down to earth genuine tasty food from all over the place - and at very good prices.

So give us an idea of the sort of foods you have in mind and us Cardiffians will be happy to help.

Thanks for your answer! You are right about the word 'ethnic' and I apologize for using it. I was thinking about Asian (Thai, Indian) or Middle Eastern. I'm happy to hear that most restaurants in Cardiff are not fancy. I like places that have good food with pleasant surroundings (not loud). Also, my husband loves sausages and chips and was unable to get them on our last trip to UK because they were always reserved for children. Do you know of a good place to get that? Thanks so much for your help.

Hi again

You have a good choice of restaurants offering the food you like. The Thai House is one of the best Thai restaurants in the country.

Also near the Hayes is my favourite Indian restaurant: The Spice Quarter:

In Cardiff Bay there are many restuarants. There is a Turkish Restaurant called the Bosphorus. I have never eaten there although I have heard mixed reviews about it - some think it is wonderful, others have been disappointed at the food and service:

By the way, if you want to try some Welsh lamb or beef, try Mimosa in Cardiff Bay. A quirky cosmopolitan menu which has some traditional Welsh dishes, and all food is organic and locally sourced. Very popular and a great buzz at lunch and evenings.

Ah yes - sausage and chips. I suggest you try a "Brains" pub. Brains is the local ale and there are many Brains pubs around Cardiff city centre. I think their menu serves sausages and mashed potato but if I remember correctly they are Welsh sausages and maybe you could swap the order for chips! My favourite city centre pub is "The Cottage" in St Mary street:

Hope that helps!

Wonderful suggestions! Thanks so much. Will try all of them as we will be in the Cardiff area for 4 days, just exploring. Did not know about the Brains pubs and will definitely try there! Love local food and your Welsh lamb sounds divine. Thank you for the websites, too. We are leaving in two weeks and will be in UK for three weeks, driving the backroads. Will try to bring some FL sunshine with me!

Agree with Jim about La Fosse - one of my collegues eats out all the time (her husband is a medical rep and they take doctors out!!) and she won't go there any more!

I quite like Giovannis on the Hayes for Italian food and Jim's suggestions of the Spice Market and henthai restaurant are well known in Cardiff.
