Any suggestions for driving to Cardiff from London? Car vs train?

It's an easy drive, the M4 motorway runs from West London, all the way there. Can take you anything from two and a half to four or five hours dependant on when you travel and traffic.

Alternatively, it's a direct train from Paddington station, taking just over two hours and running twice and hour.

Depends if you want to take a car really!

Car - do you want a meandering country route with interesting sights en route and if so what interests you? If you want to get there ASAP get on the M4 and keep going until you find Cardiff.

Lots of trains to Cardiff - takes about 2 hours, cheapest advance standard class single I found is £12.

Given the option I would choose train, depends what you intend to do in Cardiff. Parking in Cardiff is not that cheap which could be a factor for you.

The trip to Cardiff by car will only take 4-5 hours if the motorway is closed due to an accident and you are stuck on it; not impossible, but unlikely. Otherwise it is a 2.5 hour easy drive. Avebury is not far off the M4 if you fancied an interesting stopover.

If you don't intend to travel outside Cardiff, the train would make more sense, since you then don't have to pay for parking etc, but if you intend to tour a little, the car will make more sense.

Driving times really depends where in 'London' you are starting from. Where are you coming from, where are you headed to in Cardiff and do will you be travelling outside Cardiff after you arrive? This info would allow us to be much more helpful with advice.

Thinking about pickin up car at Heathrow and heading south. Actually heading to a farm near the Cambria Foothills. Will be staying in a farmhouse and think only way to see sights would be with personal vehicle.
