Belfast/BallyCastle/Kilkenny/Dublin

Hi, we're arriving in Belfast in the summer of 2014 to visit friends who live in Ballycastle - we're planning to hire a car at the airport for a 3/4 day trip which is working out at around £50...this part I'm fine with - the next part is the tricky bit - any advice please on the best (quickest, best value) way to get from Belfast City Airport (where we return the car) to Kilkenny using public transport (we don't fancy doing the 5 hr drive from Ballycastle to Kilkenny) and then we have to return to Dublin a few days later to catch a flight back to London.

And do you know if you have to declare to the hire car company if you do happen to drive over the border to the south??

Many thanks in advance.

After your trip to Ballycastle, Return your car to the city airport and get the 600 airport bus to Glengall St (every 20 mins), walk across the street and board the Aircoach( hourly on the half) to Dublin Airport then board a JJ Kavanagh bus route 717 from the airport to Kilkenny if you get a return it will bring you back to the airport for your return flight.

Yes if you hire a car you must declare your going south and some do make a charge.

If you wish to take the train, from Belfast City Airport take the courtesy minibus to the Sydenham station and take a train to Belfast Central. Thence the Enterprise train to Dublin. In Dublin transfer by Luas tram from Connolly Station to Heuston Station for a train to Kilkenny.

Times and fares at www.translink.co.uk (to Dublin) and www.irishrail.ie (from Dublin)
