Transport from Dublin to Belfast, without a car

What are the preferred modes of transportation between Dublin and Belfast? Specifically Dublin Airport to Belfast?

Also, what are the preferred methods between Belfast and Dublin, specifically to Dublin city centre?

The bus is the easiest way - straight from the terminal doors to Belfast city centre. You have two options for the bus. The more direct and quickest is Aircoach, as mentioned above. Bus Eireann and Translink also offer a joint service called the X1/X2 which take a wee bit longer as it has a couple of stops along the way, but there's not much difference really. Personally I would bring copies of both timetables and when you're through arrivals just see which one departs next.

Best method is the Goldline coach (X1 or X2 service). You could use it for both of your journeys - It runs both ways from Dublin city centre to Dublin Airport to Newry to Lisburn to Belfast city centre (Europa bus station) on an hourly basis.

The price is also reasonable, I think it's around £8-10 each way. You can find timetables and prices on the translink website

Incorrect - as others have stated, strictly speaking, the *best* way is Aircoach.

Goldline isn't a million miles behind, but Aircoach just about wins.

I would agree Aircoach comes out on top, based on the directness, timing and cost, but you're right there isn't much in it really.

The "best" service is which ever bus leaves next after you arrive landside. Whilst Aircoach is slightly preferable it's not worth waiting another 40 minutes if you can take the next X1 or X2.
