Frommer's Best Loved Driving Tours for Scotland has been widely recommended on this forum for anyone taking a road trip. We took along Peter Irvine's Scotland the Best ( it's full of info but not as user friendly as we would have liked); Eyewitness Top Ten Scotland ( DK) and the Michelin Scotland map ( purchased it at Edinburgh airport!). Also, MapEasy's Guidemap to Scotland and Edinburgh ( it's waterproof and tear resistant).

I use "Scotland the Best" by Peter Irvine all the time.

Scotland the Best is good but it's more a set of themed listings and slightly awkward if you don't know where places are without having to look them up.

As a Scot, I'd suggest the 'Rough Guide' or 'Lonely Planet' guides are quite good and organised geographically, which is probably easier for a first trip.

There are lots of road maps - you'll be able to choose (from a slightly expensive selection) at the airport, major rail station or Tourist Information Centre. Compare a few and see which suits you best.
