How is uber/lyft/etc in cities?

We are taking an 8 day trip in Scotland and hoping to travel mainly by train and ride share companies. But wanted to find out how prevalent those companies are?

Thanks!!

Uber is available in the larger cities and they helpfully provide a list on their site https://www.uber.com/en-GB/cities/

Public transport and local taxis are much more prevalent.

Ride share not so common.

Lyft is not available in Europe. Uber only Edinburgh and Glasgow is Scotland.

I think I'd probably place more trust in a proper taxi even if it costs a little more: someone who is more likely to know the city, and with a meter running so you know what the price is. There are plenty private hires, and uber is muscling into that market, but you hear scare stories over cars not turning up or prices getting hiked.

In Scotland both taxis (which can be hailed on the street, and have taximeter charging) and private hires (which must be booked in advance, not hailed on the street, and have fixed fares agreed with the driver) are licenced and regulated by local councils.

Both are generally reliable.

Uber is available in Glasgow, although other taxi companies are just as good / better. If in Glasgow, I usually flag down a black cab if in the city centre and each area has different companies however I have found Hampden Cabs to be pretty reliable over the years (especially using their app which allows you to book using card and track your booking on a map).

Hi Elizabeth, great question.

I personally prefer black cabs but my daughter who works in London and is permanently penniless would never dream of using anything but Uber for taxi. She has been using them here for 2nyears successfully.

There are plenty of uber drivers in Glasgow and edinburgh but beyond the big cities you might struggle.

Public transport is cheap, buses etc. trains if you book in advance you will get good rates. In Edinburgh you will not need a car public transport is great. Use the trams and local buses and you will be fine.

Happy planning.

Uber prices are displayed when the ride is booked, same with Gett, unless you choose the metered option.

I have so far found Uber and Gett to be much more trustworthy than a lot of the local companies in and around Glasgow, and the divers are usually a much better standard as well.
