Lodging fees - included or not?

We are starting to plan a trip to Scotland next summer. As we're working through anticipated costs, I am wondering - are the prices quoted for lodging inclusive of everything? In the US, there's sales tax, historic fees, etc added to the base price of a room. Is this similar in Scotland - if so, approximately how much additional should be budgeted for those 'extra' taxes? If not - AWESOME!

Thank you!!

Carrie

Prices in the UK should be shown inclusive of all taxes and fees: the price you see is the price you'll pay. It is an extremely sensible way of doing things, one I wish we would adopt in North America.

If there is a surcharge for using a credit card to make a booking or a cleaning fee for a flat then this should be shown up front early on in the booking process.

Yep, price you see is price you pay!

We have VAT (Value Added Tax) currently 20% on most things, but it is included in the price quoted.

So if you are quoted £100 for a hotel room, that's what you will pay.

Yes, there should be no unpleasant surprises her like there can be in the US. There's a current thread somehwere regarding a stay in New York with additional fees for city tax, a daily service charge and goodness knows what else!

The law requires consumer prices in the UK to be quoted including VAT.

Note that some foreign booking websites don't have to (and don't) comply with this.

The only exception you might find is if booking a lodge or cottage for self catering. You might find gas and electricity are an additional charge but that should be it.
