Rent a phone

My family will be going to Scotland in about three weeks. We want to rent phones so that we can keep in contact. Does anyone have a service/company that you have used and were happy with? I would prefer a service in the UK so that I can have the phone delivered to my hotel and then picked up from there.

I've no idea if such a service exists or how much you are thinking of paying, but it is very easy to buy a cheap phone in the UK and many high street shops specialising in them to help you.

I am hoping to be pasting you a link to an example of how cheaply you can buy a phone

…carphonewarehouse.com/pay-as-you-go/…

Hope that link works, there are loads of similar companies/deals

Thank you for your information. I will look into this.

I checked into a company called AdamPhones where one actually hires a phone for a week or whatever time frame is needed. Has anyone heard of this company or used them?

Have you considered just buying UK SIM cards and putting them in your own phones? I'm sure that would work out a lot cheaper than hiring phones.

The link above should hopefully give you information about that as Carphone Warehouse (a national chain of phone stores) also sell their own SIM card. If I remember correctly you just pay for the credit, the card itself is free and call charges are very reasonable.

The last poster's advice is good, but remember to get your phone company to unlock your handset before you go. It can take a couple of weeks and there will be a small fee.

Thank you for all the ideas. I clicked on a vendor advertising on this site and found Cellomobile which rents phones for the cheapest rate I have found in my extensive research including all the possibilities suggested. I will be able to get four phones at the rate of $107.56 per week including shipping and insurance. Incoming calls are free and outgoing calls are $.59/minute.

I don't understand why you would want to do this when you can buy cheap pay-as-you-go mobiles from supermarkets (e.g. Asda) with better call charges.

Shehall you are obviously not listening to the info from other posters. Renting phones for three weeks is gonna cost you $321 plus postage.

Buying the damn things when you get here will cost you as little as £60 ($110). Its a no brainer thats why there are so few companies renting phones here.

Also as already stated you can just use a phone from the states (as long as its tri or quad band, most are, and unlocked) by getting a UK sim card when you get here. You can get these at all phone shops on the streets of Scotland. Actually if you look on the London Forum, jdbri, a regular, will actually send you sim cards free of charge if you make a small donation to a local charity.

don't go down the rental route, its not woth it.

"Thank you for all the ideas."

Which you have ignored as they dont fit your pre-conceived idea that renting must be best?

"I clicked on a vendor advertising on this site and found Cellomobile which rents phones for the cheapest rate"

Thats like planning to do your grocery shopping in the cheapest store on Rodeo Drive.

"I have found in my extensive research including all the possibilities suggested"

Except those possibilities that are far cheaper than suggested? So it wasn't that extensive.

FWIW though everyone's advice here seems to be falling on stone-deaf ears, just to repeat whats been said, you can BUY cell phones for LESS than the cost of ONE WEEKS rental. All incoming calls to UK mobiles are free in the UK so thats no biggie as far as your rental deal is concerned, they could equally well have put 'phone has keypad', or 'phone has screen'.

Is there a particular reason you're so set on renting the mobile/cell phones?

I am sorry that I have offended many of you. I do appreciate your concern about me getting the best deal for phones and all of the information that you supplied me to do so. It is possible I did not fully understand the advise you gave me. I will attempt to explain myself:

I checked into the website that was supplied. The cheapest phones I could purchase would be $160(US) @ $40 per phone for the four phones I need. The phones that I currently have in the US will not accept SIM cards since they are of a format that does not allow use of SIM cards outside the US.

I then checked into renting phones for ONE week and they were cheaper than buying phones ($160).

If I still have something wrong, I will humbly accept your information.

Thank you.
