Prestwick Airport to Dundee - Is it going to be a nightmare?

I wanted to take advantage of the Ryanair flight deal up until the end of jan 09 so that I could visit some family and friends in Dundee. The problem is that Ryanair fly to Prestwick and I was wondering what is the easiest and not too expensive route to Dundee from there? Will be travelling in late January. Thanks for any help in advance.

All passengers going to and from the Prestwick airport will receive 50% discount on the standard rail fare. To qualify for the discount passengers have to show their official flight confirmation and photo id to the train conductor when buying their ticket. If it's within the first six months of a new route then travel would be free.

There is a train station at the airport, accessable via a pedestrian walkway. It is on the Glasgow Central to Ayr line. Trains to Dundee leave from Glasgow Queen Street. Even with the half price offer it may still be cheaper to get the train between Prestwick and Glasgow Central and then get a citylink bus (ticket bought in advance) from the Buchanan bus station to Dundee.

Not difficult, you take train from Prestwick airport station to Glasgow Central, then get Dundee train from Glasgow Queen St.Stations are less than 10 mins walk apart or there is a free bus.

Show a copy of your air ticket on the train and you get 50pc discount Prestwick/Dundee.

Same on way back,go to ticket office at Dundee and they will give same discount.

It will take just under 3 hours to get from Prestwick to Dundee including the change of station in Glasgow. Just watch out if you are travelling late in the evening or on a Sunday to check for last trains and engineering works. Check out this link to the train operator's website for further details. firstgroup.com/scotrail/timetables/index.html

Engineering works are not normally an issue between Glasgow and Dundee as there are 2 rail routes both from Glasgow Queen Street. The normal route is via Stirling and Perth but there's an alternative route via Haymarket and Kirkcaldy (changing at Haymarket). It would be most unusual for engineering works to be scheduled on both routes at the same time.
