Scotland for 9 or 10 days

We are a kiwi couple in our late 20's and are looking at hiring a car, which we will do from London and spending 9 or 10 nights in Scotland. We will spend 4 nights in Edinburgh, and we are interested in visiting Loch Ness and Isle of Skye on our travels. Can anyone recommend an itinerary for us or suggest places to visit. We like beautiful scenery, coastline and castles. We will be on a tight budget and will be trying to stay at backpackers/campsites/B&B for most of the trip. We are looking at going in early October this year. Thanks very much.

Have you thought about traveling from London to Scotland by air or by train? The drive is long and pretty boring. You would find a car a liability in Edinburgh. You would have to pay through the nose to park and seeing Edinburgh by car is hopeless.

I would consider waiting till you're done with Edinburgh and then hire a car to see the rest of the country.

Hi,

There's rarely a day goes by without a request for a itinerary including castles, Loch Ness and Skye.

In the last day alone the following have been updated - "May 2010 update", "Self-drive around Scotland", "Scotland itinerary in the works", "Scotland itinerary", etc

There's tons of info on here to answer, or help you focus, your questions.

cheers

If this was me... I would rent a car at the airport and drive north from there. Perhaps through Oxfordshire and then up to the lakes district (stunning!) and then up to Scotland along the west side. Make a loop north through Skye, then down to loch Ness and through Inverness down to Edinburgh. Once at Edinburgh I'd dump the car!! What money you will pay in the one way fee will be less than the parking fees you will have to pay if you keep it.

When you are done in Edinburgh, take the train to London and spend a few days there before you go home. This is just what I would do, but you of course have to do what you like. Really, when the locals say a car in Edinburgh is a headache, they are right!

Are you committed to driving from London to Scotland?

Are you intending to spend time in London? If not why not get a cheap flight from Heathrow .

If you are spending time in London, get the Heathrow express into Central London. Use public transport to get around in London. (Cheap and easy. No problems with parking etc). Then catch the train from King's Cross to Edinburgh. (Book early to get cheap fares). In Edinburgh, again use public transport. . Only hire a car once you start touring from Edinburgh. This is probably the best way to keep costs low as one way hire charges for a car will be high.

The VisitScotland website has some itineraries for car drivers that you can use to build your own route and to see some ideas of places to visit:

The Undiscovered Scotland website is another excellent resource:

The following commercial sites also have ideas for self drive tours:

I suggest that you take the train from London to Edinburgh. The train leaves from King's Cross station in London and covers the 625+ km in about 4 hours 30 minutes. It is much quicker and less tiring than driving. Europcar has a car hire office within Edinburgh Waverley railway station (the city's main station). If you book online with a credit card a few weeks in advance you can get some great bargains. See www.eastcoast.co.uk
