(10 days) This year think we will do part 1 midlands to lakes and then would like to expore somewhere else in scotland before finishing of in Edinburgh for long bank holiday weekend (August) Would love recommendations for 3/.4 days around scotland. In own car and just 2 adults.. Many thanks

As you have done the Borders and Edinburgh then might I suggest on leaving the Lakes head up the M74 to Glasgow (2hrs) then another 1 hr later you are at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, from here you can continue on to the likes of Oban and the Islands.

Turn left after the border and head for the coast. Several pretty villages and the Galloway Forest park .

Then head up the Ayrshire coast and head over to Arran from Ardrossan or continue over the Erskine Bridge to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. Then head east to Edinburgh.

Edinburgh will be heaving, so book early or stay along the Lothian coast and go in by train.

As you only have 4-5 days don't try and do too much. peterscot has already suggested Galloway and I would fully support this.

Dumfries and Galoway is a delightful area which is completely missed by the tourists in their dash for the north.

The scenery in parts is as good as the Highlands but without the crowds. There is good coastline, ruined castles, plenty of small villages.

Good places to visit are:

Glen Trool and Loch Trool,

Mull of Galloway

Threave Castle on an island in the middle of the river and visited by boat

Threave Castle Gardens

Wigtown (Book capital of Scotland)

Whithorn and it's early Christian heritage

Bladnoch distillery

Logan Gardens

Creetown Gemrock Museum

Allow 3-4 days to enjoy the area and then swing back to Edinburgh following peterscot's route.

The August bank holiday weekend is the climax of the Edinburgh festival season and accommodation is at a premium in both availability and cost, so this should be your immediate priority in terms of booking at this stage
