Moderate hikes with castles not touristy plus sheep on road

Planning to be in the highlands and Edinburgh. We have about 8 days and so far plan to be in Isle of Skye for 2 or 3 days, and Edinburgh for 3 days. Would love suggestions for hikes that will take us through rugged terrain and, if possible, some castles!! One traveller of Scottish descent wants there to be sheep on the road!!

These websites may give you some ideas. I usually took shortish walks recommended by the B&B proprietors. We saw sheep on the roads when we were in Skye, on the road to Armadale. We picked up a little tourist newspaper that even gave instructions about what to do if you happened to hit one with your car.

Duirinish might fulfill the sheep requirement. It certainly had Highland Cattle wandering around when I was there. It's on the road from Skye to Plockton.

When you're in Edinburgh, take a walk between Borthwick and Crichton castles... rugged terrain, castles and guaranteed sheep! :) Also have a look at taking a walkaround the coast to Fastcastle Head and the ancient castle ruins there.

In Skye, take a walk through the Fairy Glen near Uig to the Fairy Castle, (Castle Ewen). Easy walk but interesting! You may also fancy a walk up McLeaod's Tables on Skye with a visit to Dunvegan Castle... some really nice (and largely neglected) walking.

Hi

I agree about Duirinish - and it is handy for Skye.

http://walking.visitscotland.com/ is another good source for walk ideas.

Although not in the Highlands, the hike through Dollar Glen to Castle Campell is one of my favorite. The trail is well marked and there are some incredible views of the surrounding area extending out to the Forth!
