Itinerary Suggestions

Hi.

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Scotland with 9 days to explore in July. Thus far we are spending two nights in Oban, two in Portree and the final three in Edinburgh. We are stumped on where to focus the three days and two nights between Skye and Edinburgh.

We will drive through Fort William and Glencoe on the way from Oban to Portree.

Should we focus time in the Inverness area? Fife? Or somewhere we have not yet considered.

We like scenery, quaint villages, day hikes, recommended restaurants and pubs, etc.

Thanks so much!

Susan

quaint villages, recommended restaurants souggests you might head to the East Neuk of Fife.

This is very gentle scenery compared with the highlands. Harbours with white houses clustered on the clopes behind the. Gentle walking as well compared with the highlands. There's a coastal train right round the Fife coast and there are inland walks as well.

walkhighlands.co.uk/fife-stirling/east-fife.… This site covers the whole of Scotland, not just the highlands.

You could stop in Pitlochry on your drive from Skye to Edinburgh. There are some great hikes in and around there. I would recommend the coastal route of Fife. You could stop at St. Andrew's, Crail, Anstruther (fish & chips), Elie (look for the chainwalk, we just did that and LOVED it), Burntisland, Aberdour. You can easily park your car in one of the coastal towns, walk the coast trail to the next town train station and hop a train back to your car. You might also want to check out a walk across the Forth Road Bridge (do some research on where to park and walk part way out or the whole way across and back) if it's good weather. The walkhighlands website is good as well as http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/

Two nights on Skye gives you only one complete day for this big and wondeful island. Not enough! So you need to spend at least one of your three 'spare' nights on Skye.
