Five days in Scotland....Itinerary Suggestions Required

Hi All,

We are two family(4 adult and 2 kids(2y,5y)) planning a trip on first week of October for 5-6 days.

The objective of our trip is to see scotland. We are planning to fly down to Scotland from London and then hire a car and roam around places and then finally drive down to London.

Just want to know if this is the right thing to do or we should just visit places in train or doing day trips while in scotland. As the driver is used to Left hand driving will it be difficult to drive around scotland ?

Any recommendation from where to start and the must see places in Scotland for the time frame specified. We dont want to stress ourselves too much and want a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Thanks,

Tahir

I'd fly to Inverness, hire a car and head for Aviemore. There are several decent hotels which cater well for families with stuff like swimming pools and soft play areas for wet weather.

If the weather's good there are many attractions within a short drive such as

You are unlikely to have really bad weather in early October - at least not disruptive bad weather although its been rather windy in the last few days. Car is certainly the most flexible option.

Have you had a look at this website? - it may help you decide what you want to see, its really very helpful

Hello All,

Firstly thanks everyone for the wonderful suggestions.

Just few last minute changes and since the bookings has been done need some further suggestions. As many has recommended on visiting Edinburgh we decided to start our journey from there.

So we are arriving on Edinburgh on Saturday afternoon will be staying at Premier Inn in Edinburgh Park. Is there something which can be done around for half a day ??

Planning to take Edinburgh City Tour on Sunday.......Hopefully it should cover most of the places.

Booking a car from Edinburgh and the objective is see around scotland. As we are 4 adult and 2 child can we take a 5 seater or is 6 seater a mandatory norm ??

Third day see around edinburgh if we missed anything and then move towards Stirling castle, and cover Loch Lomond....planning to stay somewhere around there.

Fourth day move towards Inverness , enroute Fort Williams and Fort Augustus.

Stay in Inverness for two days and cover places nearby places. (Suggestion please...someone suggested Avimore)

Finally drive down Inverness to Glasgow visit the places and then fly back to london in evening.

Is this doable or are we exhausting ourselves ??

Kind Regards,

Tahir

Hi Tahir,

Just to say, you MUST MUST MUST have a 6 seater vehicle. It is both illegal and dangerous to even consider anything else. This will be strictly enforced by all car hire companies.

Also, your 2 yr old will need a regulation car seat. The car hire company should be able to provide one.

Just been on a self drive holiday thru england, scotland and ireland. Pity ireland wasnt an option. Having said that Edinburgh is fantastic plenty to do and see for a family you could easy spend 5 days there. We also went to Glasgow was disappointed & wouldnt recommend it
