What sort of things do you want to do? Your children want to do?

Are you looking at basing yourself in one place or touring?

By car or public transport if touring?

Are you looking for self catering or hotels?

Do you have a budget, in GBP, in mind?

How are you arriving in and departing from Scotland?

We were thinking of taking the train but depending how long it takes to drive to Scotland from East London it may be too far for the children.

Ideally for the children it would be castles, museums, boat tours etc.

The train to Edinburgh via East Coast will take about five and a half hours.

There are lots of things in Efinburgh to keep you and the children amused have a look at the things to do in Edinburgh link.

For cheapest fares you should be looking to book approx 12 weeks in advance.

Sometimes an upgrade to first class works out as not much more.

The Aviemore area has quite a lot for families although many of the activities listed are also outside the town

Inchmahome Priory and Lochleven Castle.

Both are on small islands, reached by a 5-10 minute boat ride. Both are ruins, that the kids would like exploring. Nice lawns, probably not that crowded. Both good spots to relax, have a picnic and to let the kids run wild.

Inchmahome is west of Stirling, sort of on the way to Loch Lomond. Lochleven is about 20 miles north of Edinburgh. You'll need a car for both.
