Transportation from airport to city center

Hi,

My wife and I will be in Edinburgh Feb 18 - 24, 2014. What is the best transport option into the city center. We are staying in a flat close to the castle. Thank you.

http://lothianbuses.com/services/airlink The Airlink bus will take you from the airport to city centre in about 30 minutes.

Additionally, depending on quite what is meant by "near the castle", the number 35 service bus from the airport might prove more convenient. At £1.50 per person, the number 35 is cheaper than the airport express (£4 per person), but takes a lot longer to get into town.

Edinburgh is a very three-dimensional city. The castle is the highest point of the centre, whereas the airport bus terminates at one of the lowest points. So although the two are barely half a mile apart, you can expect a stiff pull and - unless you are very fit or have minimal luggage - you are quite likely to find that half-mile something of a struggle!

Since you are two (so the airport express will cost you £8) and you are likely to need a taxi to get you that last half-mile (at least a fiver) you may well reckon that it's simpler and easier to take a taxi the whole way. Expect to pay a little over £20 (and remember that cab drivers here don't expect enormous tips - if you round up and add a pound, you will be considered generous).

Very funny, RonaldoC!

Just to concur with the other posters, if you let us know exactly where you are staying, we can advise. "Near the castle" could be down in the Grassmarket or up at the top of the Royal Mile, which would get you very different advice.

There are three choices.

1) the Airlink express bus, which goes by a direct route to Princes Street and Waverley Bridge, has limited stops and costs £4 per person. Its final stop of Waverley Bridge means it's a steep uphill walk or additional taxi cost to anywhere in the old town. To the Grassmarket area, however, you can get off at the West End of Princes Street and walk the easy, level walk down Kings Stables Road.

2) the number 35 service bus, which meanders through industrial and residential areas, stopping everywhere, and costs £1.50 per person. However, it does go through parts of the old town.

3) taxi. I would expect to pay between £20 and £25, including tip, depending on time of day and traffic.
