Scotland for 10 days in May

We are heading to Scotland in May. We will be flying in and out of Edinburgh and staying in Edinburgh for 2 of the days then renting a car for the rest of the time. Want a mix of history and hiking. Wanted some advise on other areas. If you had your choice would you stay near Loch Lomand or Glencoe? Is the Isle of Skye worth the side trip?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Have a look at www.walkhighlands.com for great ideas on hiking all over Scotland- good links also to local accommodation providers. 10 days is a good length of time and allows you a chance to explore a few areas of the country.

Have a browse around www.undiscoveredscotland.com for the areas you mention to get more details and photos of what each area offers.

Skye is great for hiking and walking but is a long way- a day's drive each way from Edinburgh. It is also bigger than most people realise and could easily use up 3 or 4 days of your trip plus travelling each way. You need to make a judgement call on what else you would be missing if you concentrate there.

There are also a few good suggested itineraries here www.visitscotland.com/see-do/itineraries/

Thanks for the links. Any ideas on where to stay as a sort of base for either Loch Lomand or the Glencoe area.
