HP/Jacobite Train (Fort William-Mallaig) to Isle of Skye

Hello,

Two friends and I plan to take the Harry Potter Train (Jacobite) from Fort William to Mallaig on July 15th. From Mallaig we would like to visit the Isle of Skye.

Is this a day trip?

Do people stay in Isle of Skye?

How do we get from Mallaig to Isle of Skye? We will not have a car.

Is this trip even worth it without a car?

We're having a lot of trouble finding all of this information...

Thank you!

'Is this a day trip?' - No. Skye is a big island. Even with a car you wouldn't see much of it on a day trip.

'Do people stay in Isle of Skye?' - Yes.

'How do we get from Mallaig to Isle of Skye? We will not have a car'. - On a ferry. See www.calmac.co.uk

'Is this trip even worth it without a car?' - No.

If you want to visit Skye you need to take at least a couple of days over it. The train line to Mallaig also carries normal trains, which run at times which tend to be more convenient for those continuing over the Skye. They are also a lot cheaper than the Jacobite. See www.scotrail.co.uk.

If you decide to ride the Jacobite, there are details here.

The normal Scotrail services use the same tracks. The Jacobite costs more, whether that's value depends on whether you want to experience a traditional steam train and the HP connection.

I was wondering some of the same things. I am going to have a rental car, but I am not sure if I could turn it in at Ft William and pick up another one on Skye Isle.

From where and whom will you be hiring the car from?

I'd say the answer is unlikely that none of the big hire companies will have a branch at FW so you wouldn't be able to drop it off as a one way rental.

Can't you just do the train as a full trip and continue with your original hire car to wherever you want to go next.
