Trip plan for northern Scotland July 2015

Planning a pre-cruise trip to Scotland. We have been to Edinburgh and want to explore some areas of the northern region of the Highlands. How long should we plan? We don't need to see everything but want to see the highlights of the area. Any advice would help. Thanks in advance. We will rent a car while there starting and ending in Edinburgh.

Depends where you want to go and see?

Do you have specific things or places you want to see?

Scotland is quite large. So when you say how long, I'd suggest a good couple of weeks (or more) is good, as it allows you to see both parts of the mainland, and also travel to some of the islands, maybe using one of CalMac's 'Hopscotch' ferry tickets:

If you don't have 2 or 3 weeks, then the ball goes back to you - how long have you got?
