Town/ village within 30 mins or so of airport?

We will be in Scotland in July, spending 6 days in Edinburgh and 5 more in the Highlands. On the last full day of our trip(. (Friday), we will be driving back towards Edinburgh from Glenfinnan and our flight leaves from EDI around 10:30 on Saturday morning. It will be my husband and I traveling with our 3 kids ages 11, 8 and 4.

I am thinking it might be fun to spend a couple of hours on Friday afternoon/ evening exploring a town/ village/ interesting site then stay there and drive to the airport in the morning. Any thoughts on where might work well? We would be fine with a 30-45 minute drive to the airport. The drive will be around 7 am on a Saturday so (I assume) traffic will be light. Let me know if I am wrong about this!

Alternatively, we could make a farther away stop between Glenfinnan and Edinburgh then just drive the rest of the way in the evening and stay overnight near the airport.

Would love any thoughts/ ideas!

What about North or South Queensferry, great views of the three bridges over the Forth, numerous restaurant options, and the Deep Sea world aquarium might be good for the kids just over the bridge in North .Queensferry. The Dakota hotel is very good in South Q or the hilton has a new hotel in North Q. Also Hopetoun House and grounds are well worth a visit and for any Outlander fans this was used in filming as was Midhope castle which is on the Hopetoun estate. https://www.deepseaworld.com/ http://hopetoun.co.uk/ http://edinburgh.dakotahotels.co.uk/

Also you could take a boat trip https://www.maidoftheforth.co.uk/

Stirling is only about 30 mins from the airport. Plenty to keep you occupied for an afternoon, Castle, Wallace monument etc.

Stirling worked for us just fine. We've stayed at PI Stirling South, which was cheap and cheerful .

Linlithgow is a nice town with its Palace where Mary Queen of Scots was born also a lovely Loch and the canal centre. 'Scotty' the cheif engineer of the Star Ship Enterprise will be born there in 2222. While driving along the M9 you will also see the Kelpies the largest equestrian statues in the world.

Have a look at Falkirk. Close to M9 motorway and 25 minutes from airport. Kelpies and Falkirk Wheel nearby to visit. A 3 Premier Inns around town and 3 and 4 star hotels in area.

Or somewhere on the Fife side eg Dunfermline or along the coast eg Kinghorn, Aberdour. Getting across the bridge should be no trouble at that time.

Random thought: do you or your kids like steam trains? (I'm wondering if you already have the Jacobite train included, being at Glenfinnan). If so, you could make it in time for a train trip and visit at the railway museum in Bo'ness (near Falkirk/Linlithgow) and possibly see some other things in the area as well (and stay in any of locations mentioned).

I was also going to suggest South Queensferry it’s very quaint and less than 30 mins drive (Orocco Pier nice).
