Train or Plane from London

Traveling with 1 medium suitcase 1 strolley and 1 laptop to Edinburgh. Advance purchase for train or plane there is no real rate difference. Would you advise me to fly or use the GNER

Not GNER anymore but National Express

www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com

Either means of transport has it's pros and cons.

Trains leave half hourly but it takes over 4 and a half hours - the train station is in the city centre. You get to see the scenery on the way up.

Flights are regular too - several operators Easyjet,British Airways,BMI Baby etc booking ahead should give you a good price. Flight time is under an hour but then you have waiting time at airport and transfere time from airport into city centre.

And luggage restrictions and security checks and the sheer hassles of getting to & from airports

If you are travelling from central London then get the train - booked far enough in advance the cost will be lower than the cost transport to/from the airport

Where are you getting flights for around £15 which is the cost of a cheap ticket to Edinburgh on NXEC?

You could also consider the sleeper train with Bargain Berths from around £20 - see the firstscotrail website

By the time you had got out to eg Heathrow (1 hr on tube), checked in and security (2 hrs), flight time (1 hr) and got from the airport into Edinburgh (half hour) then the train is almost quicker than flying. Plus you get a better view on the train.

If speed is important, fly through London City (LCY). Much easier to get to and much less hassle than Heathrow.

Flights to Edinburgh available from LCY with both BA and AirFrance.

Train, flying is becomming so much hasltle these days and the city centre to city centre route will probably save you time

Say taking a cheap flight on Easyjet to Edinburgh. Proabably will cost you £100 return, maybe less if you can get a special offer. Return ticket on the train maybe £40 if you book early.

Factor also the cost of the transport to the airport (£24 return) on the Stanstead express and the 45 minutes it takes. Waiting time at the airport around 1 1/2 hour miniimum to get through check-in and security. Flight time 1hr10 plus taxiing time then waiting at the carousel to get your luggage, 20 mins then half an hour to get into Edinburgh the time the train takes seems to be more attractive and a lot less hastle.

Hi

If you do go for the train it would be worth booking a seat - just in case you pick a busy train.

Apart from local trains the only time you won't get an automatic (and free) seat reservation is if you buy the ticket on the day of travel

From City centre London to City Centre Edinburgh I have found the train is on average 40 min quicker.generally more comfortable & also gives you time to do a bit of work on your lap top. Most trains on the east coast route now have internet conection [At a price].
