Hi

For going out, the Grassmarket area is good for a night out, Lothian Road can be a bit of a war zone but George Street is most upmarket. Parallel to George Street is Rose Street - loads of pubs and restaurants and pedestrianised so you can sit outside (weather permitting!)

For accomodation, there's a couple of Premier Inn/Travelodge places well positioned in the centre or the two main B&B areas are Newington and Murrayfield, both an easy journey into the city.

As well as the areas suggested you may wish to look at The Cowgate which is next to the Grassmarket so you can do both areas in a day (and night).

Another popular area is near the Playhouse Theatre where you'll find pubs and clubs as well as chain restaurants at the Omni Centre.

A bit further out is The Shore at Leith where there are some nice bars to spend an afternoon in.

as a fellow irish person....

if you want to watch any of the hurling / gaa on (if it collides with your weekend away) then the best options are:

1. finnegans wake on victoria st (just up from grassmarket)

2. biddy mulligans in grassmarket

3. ryans bar in west end (a little more on the expensive side of things)

am sure you'll fall in with many people who'll point you in the right direction :)

any other questions feel free to ask :)
