Braemar Arear or Perth to St. Andrews?

Hi! We are leaving for Scotland next week and not sure about our itinerary. We will be in Glasgow for two days and then off to Stirling and then Callander to explore the area. We are interested in seeing some castles and pretty countryside but not sure if it is worth going to the Braemar area since it looks like we will not be able to see Balmoral. We are going to St. Andrews before spending three days in Edinburgh and it would be nice to see Glamis castle. We we wondering if we should skip going north and take our time heading towards St. Andrews. We do want to drive down the coast and make a few stops along the way before we get to Edinburgh. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

While in Perth you could visit Scone Palace - the grounds are lovely as well.

Also the gardens at Drummond Castle in Crieff are worth a visit...

Thanks for the advice. Do yo think that this is a better route to take than heading up to Braemar?

Thanks!

you should try and go to Braemar - country side/ foot of the cairngorms is quite spectacular and the drive is not that much out of your way.

Miss Balmoral but keep going to Stonehaven and visit

Dunnottar Castle for spectacular photo op. Crathes Castle and gardens along the way are another not to be missed spot.

Come down the coast long A90, at Dundee skip accross Tay to St. Andrews.

You could stay around our area for a night to see Glamis Castle & Kirriemuir - then drive leasurely to St. Andrews - stop at Tentsmuir sands for a Picnic.

tomjunior makes many excellent points. I echo the Grampian Highlands, home of one of Scotland's many castle trails. Check out the following website and be sure to check opening days.

Thanks again for all of the great suggestions. Leaving in two days and we are very excited about visiting Scotland for the first time! Would be nice if it didn't rain too much!

Please don't hesitate if you think of any spots that we should see. Glamis Castle looks interesting as well!

Thanks!

If you do go to Braemar you could head towards aberdeen and then south - passing Crathes Castle - which as well as an interesting castle has gorgeous gardens. Though Dunnottar takes some beating with regard to atmosphere....

if its any encouragement, today has been a gorgeous day here...

Hello there

Balmoral Caslte and Crathie Church near Ballater is quite good. I love Ballindalloch Castle which has a homely elegent air about it.

If you are going to St Andrews the East Neuk villages of Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem and St. Monance are well visiting At Anstruther there is a good fish and chip restaurent near the Scottish Ficheries museum. Enjoy:)
