My hubby and I might be visiting Edinburgh for 4 or 5 days in mid July. No definite plans yet, but that hasn't stopped me from beginning my research. LOL!
We'll definitely walk around and tour the city for a couple of days, but I'd also love to see more of Scotland. I've read some reviews of the companies offering day tours, and a couple of those look wonderful.
I thought about taking the train to Stirling on our own since I like to wander around castles and don't want to be on a tour's timeline for that. But some of the recent reviews for Stirling Castle haven't been that great. I know that a main portion of the castle is closed for another 2 years. Is it still worth visiting?
I would also love to see Dunnottar Castle. Is this easy to do by taking the train to Stonehaven (I think that's the correct station)?
We will not be hiring a car. The thought of driving on the other side of the road scares me to death! Plus, we'd like to enjoy a few pubs along the way. :)
Are there any other ancient castles that we should see that are day trips out of Edinburgh (either on a tour or by preferably taking the train ourselves)?
