I agree the cheapest places to eat in Edinburgh, indeed any city are the fast food chains such as Macdonalds etc.

If you fancy a change from them here are a few options for you.

The baked potato shop on Cockburn Street, off the Royal Mile. All veggie, but huge portions.

Monster Mash does very traditional Olde British food. Very nice, but very filling!

Most of the pubs in Edinburgh sell food. They are nice places to eat now that there is no smoking allowed in the bars. one place that does good food is Frankensteins

You will find cheap eats in Weatherspoon Pubs. there is one on George Street called Standing Order

There are places that do all you can eat buffets such as Jimmy Chungs (chinese)

or the veggie Indian restaurant called Kalpna

Last but not least Buffalo Grill do a cheap lunchtime meal deal

If none of the above take your fancy then have a look at the List Guide for any other suggestions.

Hope you find what you are looking for, and hope you have fun!

I can certainly come up with better than McDonalds , BK etc

A lot of Indian restaurants do a set lunch deal, one near me called Imans does lunch for £6.50 for 3 courses, a bit over your budget.

The chain restarants on George Street do some good deals sunday - thursday, Gourmet Burger King does buy one get one free on main courses so it will work out under £5 if there are two of you.You can get the info on their website.

The mosque kitchen is also one of my favourites, you get rice and a curry for £3.50.

If you can splash out Cafe Rouge does 2 course and a drink for £10.

Pizza Express does 2 for 1 on main courses and a free starter on Wednesdays with a voucher from their website. Again if there are 2 of you it will be just under £5.

Have a look at a website called moneysaving expert for a few more ideas.

If the weather is good you could make your own picnic and sit on the grass in Princes Street Gardens. There is excellent picnic food at Marks and Spencers & Marks and Spencers Simply Food (Princes Street or Waverley station) and if you want to cut costs even more they have a budget range and meal-deal.

Boots at Waverley station offer a 3 item meal-deal complete with little paper bag to carry your picnic for just 2.99 - an example of what that will get you is a sandwich, a packet of crisps and an innocent fruit smoothie. There is usually plenty to choose from including salads and fruit too. The sandwiches are very good.

If you want a picnic in Princes St Gardens then there is also a Sainsbury's on Rose St / St Andrew Square (behind Jenners) with a salad and fruit bar and hot pasties.

The Grassmarket Bar (on the West Port, just off the Grassmarket) has been advertising credit crunch lunches. I can't remember the exact prices but it looked ludicrously cheap. Only available Monday - Thursday lunchtime, I seem to recall, but did include something like Haggis, Neeps and Tatties for £1.99 if memory serves.

For something a bit different, there's a wonderful little take-away eatery at the bottom of Victoria street called Oink that does hog roast (roast pork) rolls. A single roll is £4.60 but includes half a pig, stuffing and apple sauce and are simply amazing. They have a small sit in area, or you can take it out and sit in the Grassmarket.
