Travel to St Andrews

My husband will be visiting my daughter in London during July and thought he might try a get up to St Andrews for 2010 Open. His plans would be to catch the Calendonia Sleeper leaving London on the Tuesday night and arrive in Edinburgh Wednesday morning, He would spend the day looking around Edinburgh and have accommodation somewhere in Edinburgh, hopefully he will be able to leave a small amount of luggage at his accommodation. Thursday and Friday he will travel by train / bus to St Andrews for the golf returning to on Thursday night to accommodation in Edinburgh and then on Friday to again catch the sleeper back to London. What I need to know is how long it takes to travel to St Andrews by train and can he just purchasetrain tickets on the day of travel. I realise he has to pre book the sleeper, also can you just purchase some sort of general admission tickets for the golf also on the day. what sort of cost is he looking at for golf tickets and train travel. Does anyone have any tips for budget accommodation in Edinburgh close to the station.that's another question what station in Edinburgh will the sleeper stop at and is the same station he will get the train to St Andrews? Thanks

There isn't a train station in St Andrews. He will need to get a train to Leuchars, the nearest station. He gets this from Waverley, which is the station he will arrive at on the sleeper. The train journey to St Andrews takes about an hour and he can buy his ticket at the station on the day.

Trains might be busy that week because of the golf so he should get there early to get a seat. There will be taxis at Leuchars for the short drive into St Andrews.

You get a train to Leuchars, then bus to St Andrews. You can buy a combination train/bus ticket at Edinburgh Waverley

scotrail.co.uk/content/combined-rail-bus-tic…

However come the Open there will be no doubt plenty of direct coach services to St Andrews from Edinburgh so check later

If he can't store his luggage at the hotel then he could leave a bag at the lockers at Edinburgh Bus Station just off St Andrew's Square or with the left luggage office at Edinburgh Waverley - the former is a lot cheaper

As peterscot mentioned there are no mobile phones allowed on the course but should he have a phone then there are lockers where he can leave it before he enters and collect it when he exits the course. Lots of people do this.
