Concerts or Theater July 22 - 24

Visiting Edinburgh on July 22 thru July 24 before setting out on a walking tour. Have searched for some evening concerts or theater but seems like most events are waiting for the festival in August. Can anyone suggest some venues, concerts or theater they may know about on those dates? We like amost anything including classical to pub music and any kind of theater. When traveling, I never have trouble filling the days but it is hard to find night time activities. Suggestions much appreciated. Many thanks.

Yes, the end of July is the dead time for theatre before the explosion in August where you can't walk down the street but get stopped and tempted into some makeshift theatre in a disused church or hall!!

There are the usual mainstream cinema options, or take a ghost tour in the evening, or just take a stroll along the Water of Leith or through Stockbridge to Inverleith park. There is often live music in some of the pubs- Whistlebinkies or Sandy Bells perhaps. Check out www.list.co.uk for some other options of events during your stay.

Whiski Bar on the Royal Mile has live music each night, and gets good reviews from tourists. It is free.

If you fancied taking in a film, but something a little different, The Cameo cinema in Bruntsfield (picturehouses.co.uk/cinema/…), and the Filmhouse on the Lothian Road (http://www.filmhousecinema.com/) often have some older and arthouse movies that you won't find in other mainstream cinemas.

The Film House is a great suggestion. We used to live in NYC and went to many unmainstream films so this may be a good way to spend an evening. These dates were the best ones for us to visit Scotland so will have to make do with what is available. Have been online and see that there is a Penguin Talk at the Zoo while we are there. Sounds pretty good!!

From another NYCer:

I would check the Stramash Scots Music show (www.stramash-scots-music.org). It has traditional Scottish tunes with bagpipes and fiddles and had a good crowd. It should have shows in July, so perfect for pre-festival travels.

As 3nations points out, Edinburgh is experiencing the calm before the storm at the moment.

These are the listings for Edinburgh for the dates you mentioned in The List. You can filter further by event type on the black bar:
